In addition, when booting while the software is installed, the display will switch off (monitor says 'No Signal') for about 30-45 seconds between the black Windows startup screen, and the blue WIndows startup screen appearing. Without the software, I can't use surround sound, precise audio control, and other features. I previously had a Plantronics Gamecom 780 headset, but the wires had become frayed and were shorting out, so I temporarily replaced it with an old Razer Kraken 7.1 while I waited for my 788 to arrive. The software had worked entirely fine when I switched to the Kraken temporarily, but after that week, it no longer works. No unusual software was installed during that week, save for the Kraken drivers and Razer Synapse (both have since been uninstalled again).
First world problems.
I’ve played the game many times, and yes it is scary each time, but the fidelity of the headset brought me into the world more than I though possible. VR may be the next big thing, but for the best possible immersion today, you can’t go further than a great headset. Now to the nitty-gritty of reviewing this headset. Sound Quality The Gamecom 788 is by far the best audio you can get for the money, at only £58.99, you will find it unlikely to beat it’s quality at that price. No download zombie shooting games. In all honesty it ranks up there with headsets in the low-to-mid £100’s. Similar to the previous generation, the Gamecom 780, the 788 incorporates the latest Dolby 7.1 technology. While not true 7.1 in that there are not 8 sources of audio, it does create an all immersive soundscape when activated (by the Dolby button on the headset).

Hey there, For some reason I have yet to determine, the Dolby Surround Sound software for my Gamecom 788 headset won't open properly. It will begin to start, but hang at around 2700-2900k according to task manager, and never move from there. The software in question is used to enable this headset's surround sound features and precise volume control, and is available on this site: I haven't been able to determine if it's due to the installer itself, or an error with the program. Installing and uninstalling APPEARS to work, though there is a delay around halfway through the install of about a 30-45 seconds. Installing the plug-and-play drivers from the headset works perfectly fine, and I can get stereo sound and basic functionality from that, but when the Gamecom software is installed, the plug-and-play driver will stop working, and if I try to install the driver while the software is installed, it will always fail (even though it doesn't fail when the software isn't installed).
You can fold the earpods or swivel and lay them flat for storage or travel. As to the comfort level, we combed through some user reviews and saw mostly positive feedback, for what that's worth.

Plantronics GameCom 780/788 driver is a windows driver. Common questions for Plantronics GameCom 780/788 driver Q: Where can I download the Plantronics GameCom 780/788 driver's driver?
The takeaway here is that Plantronics is using its driver update as an opportunity to issue a refresher headset, meaning it's primarily a product being delivered for strategic marketing reasons, as a 'refresh' often is. Of course, this doesn't mean that the 788 is bad, just that if you still have a 780 you won't be needing an upgrade any time soon. The 788 brands a giant '7.1' wherever possible for its marketing approach, with the headset boasting digital surround broadcasting across its two 40mm drivers (one in each ear, to clarify). As with most modern gaming headsets, 7.1 sound isn't truly 7.1, instead it's generally simulated from a stereo or 5.1 setup, using virtual / digital positioning to artificially position sounds spatially in a fashion that mirrors a 7.1 setup. Even though it's not using 7 speakers in the ear cup, digital positioning done properly can trick most users well enough for immersive gaming experiences. Audio Quality Plantronics' GameCom 788 sees the continuation of the 780's Dolby Headphone Technologies integration, a surround technique that's activated by a hardware toggle (conveniently placed on the left cup).
Plantronics' headband is comfortable and remains relatively unnoticed during use. As with the original 780, the 788 has a rubberized material infused in its headband that allows for high flexibility and better durability. Similar to what most other major headset brands do, the ear cups are mounted upon an axis to allow 90-degree rotation. This will primarily improve durability when being handled with less care, but also enables users who like the headset resting around the neck.
A story about triumph in the face of adversity. A story about excellent use of resources, and a product that is brilliantly attuned to its target market. This is a review of the Plantronics Gamecom 788 Digital 7.1 USB headset. I approached this review with a concern for my own personal bias. A product deserves to be objectively reviewed, but sound is such a subjective experience, and a 7.1 headset with a price tag of only $80 doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.

As the level progresses, and I first see the Alien, I run as fast as I can down a corridor and jump into a locker. Without realising initially, due to the immersion brought by the phenomenal audio piped into my skull, I hold my breath. I hear the Alien sniffing and stalking, she knows where I ran, slowly she comes into my periphery, the haunting sound of hissing and breathing continues, getting ever louder.still, I hold my breath.don’t move.I see her slowly slithering past the locker I am in, she knocks something over and I find my hand covering my mouth so she doesn't hear me, yes that is how immersed I am in the world thanks to the Gamecom 788, I can hear everything.
Stay focused on fighting and winning - adjust the volume and mic mute with earcup controls without taking your eyes off the screen. After the game, keep this comfortable headset on to catch up with friends on Skype or kick back and enjoy a blockbuster movie with dynamic, cinematic sound.
Now we've seen a full refresh with the release of the Plantronics GameCom 788, a headset that is described on their website as providing you with Dolby 7.1 surround-sound in order for you to ' feel every bit of action around you and hear opponents before they see you.' Although the frame may have been brittle and the headset a little uncomfortable, the price-point and sound quality made Plantronics' older models a best selling product. Has there been any major improvements made all these years later with the 788 and are the common issues still present? Read on to find out. Specifications The 788 offers you a Dolby Digital surround-sound through a USB-connected product, pumping the sound through two 40mm drivers rated at 20 Hz - 20 kHz, paired with a microphone frequency response of 100Hz - 10KHz.

It doesn't hang in task manager for me either. I've just emailed their support email which will take one business day hopefully;D (Doubt it). However, I plugged the headset into my computer which I assumed was bad because when I got the headset it said you should install the software before plugging the device in. I plugged in the device and it seems to work without the surround sound. Obviously you don't get 7.1 but you still get the base function mic/headphone with stereo sound. I'll use this until they reply back to my email. Ill update you if I get a reply.
This is a product review. This is also a story. A story about success.
Other Thoughts: It *does* work with W10, you just have to manually install the W8.1 drivers (download from website). Pros: - Great sound especially when you figure out how to set up 7.1 - Microphone works great on both pc and ps4. I get compliments all the time about how clear I sound. - Love the soft comfortable feel of the ear cups - Looks great Cons: - The headset feels somewhat flimsy - Sometimes the volume has a delayed response when using headset controls. - The headset is hard to adjust to my head though it could just be me as I have a pretty big head. Other Thoughts: This headset is an awesome purchase for your entertainment center.
Plantronics Gamecom Headset Driver
Plantronics Gamecom 788 Gaming Headset
Especially games where precision sound is an important factor. The native, un-Dolby-ed sound is some of the best I've heard on comparably-priced headsets. Positional audio is accurate to games that support it. The headset seems to have a tendency to 'flatten' music a little bit, meaning that all the instruments sound about the same volume (something my high-end monitoring speakers don't exhibit), but that's not a huge downside in gaming. Explosions are boom-y and resonant, as they should be. Output on the 788 feels very close to the head and is delivered fairly centrally to the ear -- there's certainly no 'five rows back' simulation going on here.
Use what you've got until it breaks. The 788 brands a giant '7.1' wherever possible for its marketing approach, boasting digital surround broadcasting across its two 40mm drivers (one in each ear, to clarify). As with most modern gaming headsets, 7.1 sound is generally simulated from a stereo or 5.1 setup, using virtual / digital positioning to artificially position sounds spatially in a fashion that mirrors a 7.1 setup. Even though it's not using 7 speakers in the ear cup, digital positioning done properly can trick most users well enough for immersive gaming experiences. The advantage of surround setups in competitive gaming is pretty straight forward. Let's take Battlefield: When there's a chopper overhead, a tank behind, infantry above-and-left on some stairs, a surround sound headset can aid the user in precisely locating the source of the audio. Using something high-end, like and impending Turtle Beach DTS products, it's further possible to determine distance (left-right depth) and location with impressive accuracy.
At $99 you'll be hard pressed to find a better headset, especially with the exceptional audio that the 788 offers.
I can wear them all day and they're fine. Surround sound is nice as well. Cons: it's an 'open-ear' headset, so it's designed so that some noise from your environment comes in. This is great for LAN parties when you want to hear your teammates cheering. It's annoying when people are doing other things in your vicinity.
The Setup So it was game time, lights were off, doors were closed, and cat firmly established in the feeding position in another room (I was well aware that there could be a bit of an issue were she to jump up at an opportune moment causing me to re-invent the Fosbury Flop) A quick visit to the Plantronics website and I was downloading the 7.1 surround software and ready to go with no problems (I was expecting a lot of faffing around to get it to work but all was well). Now I’m fortunate to live in a small village just outside of Glasgow, the upside of this is that when you turn off the lights, it’s actually dark, so all that was in my field of vision was the monitor, I couldn’t see anything else. Let's Rock!!! The game started and the recognisable ambience of the Alien soundtrack was softly caressing my ears, perhaps lulling me into a false sense of security.
Other changes include expanded driver support for Windows 8/8.1, which has been extended to the original 780 and other Plantronics products. The takeaway here is that Plantronics is using its driver update as an opportunity to issue a refresher headset, meaning it's primarily a product being delivered for strategic marketing reasons. That doesn't make it bad, it just means that owners of the existing GameCom 780 shouldn't be purchasing the new 788.
