Finally some decent quality Feudal troops. It makes the early stages (and even for the foreseeable future) much more challenging in the sense that you have to work with what you got which isn't much.
As for battling heresy without the mod, build a church and place one or two priests in the same province as the heretic, don't try to execute him as it'll only make your own priests heretics. Learn how to train priests and develop character traits and you won't need to 'fix' a perfectly good game design. I realize this is an old thread, but I'm stuck: * Disabled UAC on my Windows 10 box, check * Downloaded MTWII + Kindoms DLC from steam, check * Downloaded SS6.3, SS6.4, check * Renamed medieval2.exe to kingdoms.exe, check * Installed SS6.3 mod as administrator, check * Ran SS_setup.exe, check. Game launched, check * Installed SS6.4 patch as administrator, check X Ran SS_setup.exe. Settup succeeded but game didn't launch: 'Medieval II suffered a fatal error.' * Adjusted Steam MTWII launch options as suggested, above, check * Launched SS6.4 from steam, check So why do I care, you ask, since SS6.4 launched?
Yup, much better than retro (unless you want a better vanilla experience). I like SS6.3 much better than 6.1. I didn't really like it, but so far (as England to learn the ropes) in the Early Era I've lost York to Scotland and France is besieging Caen almost every turn. France and Scotland are allies as well which add's to the mix. Right now Nottingham is producing as many troops as possible but things are somewhat bleak. I don't have access to many good units yet (basic levies really) so taking back York will be a challenge as the Scots have a full stack garrisoned there and ready to defend with their better quality troops. (Highlanders - 4 attack and 8 defense) vs my Spear Militia (2 attack and 10 defense).
• Lord Condormanius's Mailed Knights. • Polish Units by MADTAO included. • Rusichi mod units implemented. Perfect world item drop.
The Campaign Map: Completely new and huge campaign map, covering most of Europe and the beginning of Persia. New ground types and custom climates. Maximum width the engine allows of 510 movement tiles. Mountains, hills and map outlines are based on satellite data. Work of art coastlines instead of the square 'vanilla' ones. Maximum amount of almost 200 historically medieval settlements.
Now, finally, before you run the game. Go to your Steam Library, find Medieval 2, right click and go to properties, click on Laucnh Options. This should bring up a box with a single type bar. Inside you want to input: --features.mod=mods/name-of-your-mod-folder Example: --features.mod=mods/SS6.3 After you do all that, play Medieval 2 Total War and it should run Stainless steel. If you ever want to go back to vanilla just remove the launch options. Pro-Tip: The latest patch to SS6.4 made heretics extremely OP (they start with 4 piety, spawn faster, drop your religion faster, and convert your priests a lot easier). I've found that the only way to get rid of them is assassins or using your cardinal becuase your cardinal cannot be converted.

Hi, Gigantus! Thanks for the guide! I followed this guide to get as far as ive come in installing SS. However, I ran into a problem when Ive done every step and start the game, game does start, which is first for me. However, after I choose a faction and press start game arrow, it pauses for about 5 sec, then goes into loading screen, load all the way just to CTD with no explanation. I have tried this guide twice, each after fresh install, and it is steam version of M2.
Robert de Mowbury fought valiantly but died saving Caen. I'm actually rather starting to like it. It's turn 60 now and I just got Feudal Knights and Miles Peidities (Spelling?). Finally some decent quality Feudal troops. It makes the early stages (and even for the foreseeable future) much more challenging in the sense that you have to work with what you got which isn't much.
*- New Historical Events like Order foundations, Inquisitions, cultural and scientific events, deaths of important persons. - Informative Events when a certain capital is fallen, when a princess comes of age and when a monarch dies Improved and challenging AI Armies *- Ai now uses unit priorities to build their armies - Ai is forced to make better mix of Infantry, Missiles, Cavalry and Artillery. - AI produces more Elite and Heavy units.
If I recall right, Nottingham is two turns from building a barracks that will give me two decent quality troops. My only real gripe is the recruitment system (known as Real Recruitment/RR in SS). I know it's going for historical accuracy but it's rather annoying not knowing when I will reach the 'high' period in-game and gain access to some decent Feudal units rather than my levies which are beyond useless. You can disable RR in the menu upon startup but apparently it's bugged and doesn't work.
• New quotes. • Proper character aging. • Byzantine and Kievan Rus unit cards by akvilonn.
Byzantine and Kievan Rus unit cards by akvilonn. Tax auto-manage should now work properly. Added Patriarchs for Orthodox factions. All factions now have their one-liner pre-battle speeches activated (more speeches for existing factions, and no more mute Norway, Kwarzemian Empire, etc. Generals) Unbelievable amount of fixes, both big and small, too many to mention them all.
(SS 6.4 requires 6.3 to work. 6.4 is only the patch whereas 6.3 is the actual mod base). SS 6.3: SS 6.4: Step 2: Go to your Medieval 2 Total War folder in: C: Program Files (x86) Steam steamapps common Medieval II Total War And copy your medieval2 launcher file.

6.4 will go into the 6.3 folder because duh.its a patch). Step 4: After you've finished the installation of 6.3 and 6.4 and got everything where it needs to be there's one final thing to do. Inside the SS Mod folder you should see down at the bottom SS set-up. Run that as admin and configure the settings how you like. Now, finally, before you run the game. Go to your Steam Library, find Medieval 2, right click and go to properties, click on Laucnh Options.

Yea, I was reading the twcenter forums to see what date the game changes to the 'high' period and I came across one of the modder's saying that the disable RR option is bugged and doesn't really work. Anyway, As you can see, I don't really have any forces in the field to hold the French from besieging Caen every turn since they are all up north trying to retake York. I actually just sallied out of Caen and killed the French King winning the battle barely.
There is one way though. The boys who made Stainless steel made submods that altered the heretics and made them weaker.
X Ran SS_setup.exe. Game didn't launch 'Medieval II suffered a fatal error.' X Launched SS6.4 from steam. Game CTD without a message after the new campaign loads but before the map is shown. It looks like something went wrong at the SS6.4 install, but I can't tell what. I've redone this from scratch multiple times.

It also contains the mod for weaker heretics mentioned in OP. Do note that this pack will make previous save games incompatible. I tried installing TATW after i've failed to get SS running, and it worked fine. So I think it's either I did something wrong or maybe I'm misunderstanding some directions??
New troubadours event. The Campaign Map: Completely new and huge campaign map, covering most of Europe and the beginning of Persia.
• New, epic loading screens. • New music by Kevin MacLeod, Jon Sayles & Bill Hudak, vanilla MTW2 music was also brought back. (now we have 141 music files + vanilla music, compared to 89 in 6.1 and no vanilla music, that's a hell lot!) • New main menu background & splash screen by Y2day. • Faction selection crash fixed.
So I've seen a lot of people post about how this mod has crashed or won't start for them and they all receive little to no help on it. I want to see if maybe I can change that with a small tutorial. This mod took me 3 days to finally get working and 4 installations. Step 1: Get the mods here and the 6.4 patch if you want it.
The Campaign Map: • Completely new and huge campaign map, covering most of Europe and the beginning of Persia. • New ground types and custom climates.

I never thought I'd say how much I loved Hobilars and Levy Archers. After spending sometime with the campaign map, I agree with you.
